Life Of Cardinal Bishop St. John Fisher Of England 1459-1535
This work is part of the Early English Text Society's output. The language is early modern English with a somewhat archaic typefont. It is a work of hagiography written at sometime after the death of Henry VIII of England. There is some material covering the life of Fisher prior to Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon, but the bulk of the work is concerned primarily with Fisher and his friend Sir Thomas Moore's opposition to the divorce, the refusal to recognize Henry as Supreme Head Of the Church of England. A great deal of emphasis is placed on the personal harrassment Fisher suffered ;his outspoken opposition to both the divorce and the Act of Supremacy. His subsequent trial and execution are treated in detail as well as the reaction of a number of important Europeans and the fates of those involved in his death. Interesting in that it gives either a contemporary or near contemporary view of the Schism.
